For brands selling in Mexico, checkout friction often comes down to unexpected shipping costs, trust, and payment methods that do not match how customers want to pay. If you operate from the United States but sell into Mexico, those local expectations deserve their own payment strategy.
Interest-free monthly installments—known in Mexico as meses sin intereses, or MSI—are part of that strategy. Shopify Payments now supports MSI for eligible Mexican transactions without a separate payment app or additional onboarding. This article covers Mexico's MSI offering, not US Shop Pay Installments.
What are meses sin intereses, and why do they matter?
MSI splits a purchase into fixed monthly installments without adding interest to the customer's eligible purchase. The merchant pays an additional processing fee, so interest-free for the buyer does not mean free for the business.
The payment method is well established in Mexico. The operational change is that eligible merchants can offer it through Shopify Payments instead of adding a separate gateway solely for this purpose.
MSI can influence both conversion and average order value. A customer considering a higher-priced item may find predictable installments easier to manage than paying in full. They may also choose a different product or add complementary items. These are opportunities to measure—not guaranteed gains—and the additional fee must be included in the calculation.
How MSI works with Shopify Payments in Mexico
Shopify's current documentation describes MSI as a payment method merchants using Shopify Payments in Mexico can activate; it no longer labels it as early access. Check your account settings and eligibility in Settings > Payments. If the option is missing, confirm the account requirements with Shopify rather than assuming there is a waiting list.
For an eligible setup, the main rules are:
Card and currency eligibility.
MSI is for eligible credit cards, not debit cards, and transactions must be processed in Mexican pesos. The issuing bank determines eligibility, so having a Mexican credit card does not by itself guarantee that installments will appear.
Plans and minimum purchases.
Shopify lists four options: 3 months from MXN 300, 6 months from MXN 600, 9 months from MXN 900, and 12 months from MXN 1,200. Available choices depend on the card and order total. Select the terms that make sense for your average order value and margin.
The checkout experience.
When an eligible credit card is entered, checkout displays qualifying installment plans in the card form. Paying in full remains the default. The buyer chooses whether to use installments; the store does not force every eligible order into a financing plan.
Merchant fees.
Additional fees apply to installment transactions. Review the rates shown for your account in Shopify admin under Settings > Payments > Manage > More actions > Manage payment methods > View payment rates. Check the local-payment-method section before selecting plans.
How to activate MSI on Shopify
If you already use Shopify Payments in Mexico, review the available plans in the payment-method settings.
Go to Settings > Payments, open Manage for Shopify Payments, then More actions > Manage payment methods. Under local payment methods, open Meses sin intereses, select the plans you want, and save. You can choose only the plans appropriate for your store.
Shopify's documentation says MSI is activated automatically when a new merchant completes Shopify Payments setup in Mexico. Review the active plans and fees as part of your payment setup instead of assuming the defaults match your margin targets.
What to review before enabling installments
Three operating decisions matter before you start promoting MSI to customers.
Calculate the margin impact.
Include the installment fee in contribution margin alongside product cost, shipping, fulfillment, discounts, and acquisition. A higher conversion rate or order value can offset the fee, but only your results show whether that happens. Getmore helps brands evaluate checkout improvements against both sales and profitability.
Choose suitable terms.
Do not activate every plan simply because it is available. For a store with an average order near MXN 800, shorter terms may be more relevant than longer ones. Higher-value products may justify different options. Compare the fee, customer need, and actual order distribution.
Set accurate customer expectations.
Not every credit-card customer will qualify. The issuing bank, transaction currency, and order amount influence the options displayed. Marketing should say that installments are available on eligible purchases instead of promising the same terms to every shopper.
Why native MSI matters for Mexican Shopify stores
Before native support, merchants often used payment providers such as Conekta or Openpay to offer installments. That added another provider to manage, with setup and checkout behavior depending on the chosen integration.
Offering MSI through Shopify Payments can simplify payment operations and keep the eligible installment selection inside the card-payment flow. Existing Shopify Payments merchants do not need a separate onboarding process for MSI.
The practical opportunity is to remove a payment objection without making the buying journey more complicated. For medium- and high-value products, test whether customers use the option and whether the additional completed orders produce enough contribution margin to justify it.
Shopify MSI FAQs for businesses selling in Mexico
How do I enable interest-free installments in Mexico?
Open the local payment methods in your Shopify Payments settings and select Meses sin intereses. Review the available plans, fees, and account eligibility before saving. This applies to Shopify Payments in Mexico; it is not a way to activate Mexican MSI on a US Shopify Payments account.
Which cards can use MSI?
Eligible credit cards qualify according to their issuing bank; debit cards do not. The purchase must meet the selected plan's minimum and be processed in MXN. The checkout displays only the options available for that particular card and order.
How much does offering MSI cost a merchant?
An additional installment fee applies. Use the rates displayed in your own Shopify Payments account when calculating profitability. Compare net contribution from installment orders with comparable pay-in-full orders instead of judging success only by revenue or average order value.
Which installment terms can I offer?
The documented options are 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, with minimum order amounts of MXN 300, 600, 900, and 1,200 respectively. You decide which eligible plans to activate for your store.
Is MSI still limited to early access?
The current Shopify help page no longer describes MSI as early access. Merchants using Shopify Payments in Mexico should check their local payment settings. Individual customer eligibility still depends on the credit card, currency, and order total.
Do I need an app to offer MSI through Shopify Payments?
No additional app is needed for the native Shopify Payments offering. You still need a qualifying Mexican setup and appropriate payment-method configuration. Getmore can help review the checkout experience and how the available terms are communicated across the storefront.
What happens when an installment order is refunded?
Process the refund through the order's payment workflow in Shopify and confirm the payment status. How the credit appears and how remaining installments are adjusted depends on the issuing bank. Give the customer the refund details and avoid promising a specific bank-processing time or cancellation schedule that you cannot control.
